Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Hyundai Tucson automatic 2018 model. It's a 1.6 ltr. I have had this car for around 8 weeks. I really like the car. I have however got some concerns around the car. Initially, I thought it was due to the auto stop start feature, but after looking online, I think I'm wrong.
When I drive the car at low speeds, around 3 mph when, for example, looking for a parking space, the car almost feels like it's about to stall. It shudders so much. It happens all the time at those low speeds. I also notice this when I pull away after being stationary. I genuinely thought it could be the stop start feature thinking I'm about to stop the car.
I'm told by one Hyundai dealership that it's a common problem and it's to do with the dual clutch transmission.
I was told to call the dealership back where I bought the car from on Monday when their technicians are in as the sales team I bought from have never heard of this happening.
My questions are, has anyone else had the same issue and also, does anyone know if my 12 month warranty would cover this? Again the sales team can't answer my question about warranty either.
Thanks

That does sound a lot like a characteristic of a DCT. (At 3mph, it's either going to have to slip (one of) the clutch(es), or repeatedly engage/disengage it. 3mph is probably ~500rpm, which the engine can't operate at.)

I’m sitting here really hoping that the car was purchased from a Hyundai dealership. Should that be the case, you really do need to revisit the selling dealer as your description points to an expensive dual-clutch unit replacement as a minimum.
There is provision to reject a car, however I’m out of touch with the detail but the process has several steps and is time-bounded. Do a quick internet search though to discover whether you can still use the law.
Your car is equipped with a stop-start system but it is possible to switch it off via the button. I’m just curious to know how the car deals with that circumstance but there is also anti-stall technology which should ensure that the car doesn’t!
Driven correctly, these DCT systems should last as long as the clutch in any car also driven correctly. You haven’t mentioned the mileage on the car but if it is relatively low, then that points to a previous owner(s) not understanding how DCT works and driving the car as if it were a traditional automatic with a fluid coupling. Conversely, if the car has very high mileage, then the clutches may simply be on their way out.
Certainly, a return to the selling dealer is a must but what happens after that very much depends on the response from the dealership.
As these situations are very much a concern for other owners, it would be very much appreciated if you could return in due course to appraise readers of progress or otherwise. Do remember that Citizens Advice have much information on dealing with such circumstances plus there is a motoring ombudsman who may be able to assist. The first step though is the return to the selling dealer.
Good luck in achieving some satisfactory resolution.

Good morning all, thank you for all your replies.
Good news is that I did purchase it from a Hyundai used approved dealership.
They gave me 12 months warranty.
It had one previous owner and the mileage is under 45000.
I will definitely post the update here.
A friend of mine has the same car and had exactly the same problems. He told me that they wanted to try and update the software first but he insisted that they check the car properly. Eventually they changed the dual clutch under the warranty and it doesn't have any issues anymore.
I'm concerned that they will try to avoid sorting this mechanical problem out under their warranty but I have had the car for around 7 weeks only. Initially thinking it was the auto stop start thinking that I was coming to a stop, after checking online I found that this is not the case. Yesterday I was looking for parking somewhere and I couldn't believe the way in which it was shaking like it was about to stall.
I have another question and wondered what your thoughts are. Would you say that the dealership have potentially mis sold me this car? If they knew that this make and model have these issues should they not have properly checked it? They have this 100 point check that they complete but clearly it's not been completed properly. Could it potentially be a case that they could have fixed or checked this before selling it to me? Thanks again.

Sadly, while it may seem obvious to all who have had dealings with car sellers, there is no point asking mere mortals on a car forum a question which only lawyers can properly answer.TucsonOwner2024 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 8:16 am If they knew that this make and model have these issues should they not have properly checked it? Should it be the case at some point that you require legal assistance, then unless you have insurance that would cover the costs, expect some eye-watering bills.

Read your rights in this article from Auto Trader.

As for a 100 point check - sprat to catch a mackerel.
Same stuff from Which, which I find is slightly easier to understand.

You have rights, exercise them.
I'd avoid the sales team, they are there to sell cars, not fix them. Whilst a few are genuine and have some knowledge of the product they're selling, most of them exhibit the same amount of slipperiness as a politician !!

Update.
So, after numerous calls to Hyundai, the earliest they can look at my car is in around 5 weeks time.
They also will not tell me if I'm covered with their warranty until they assess it.
They have also told me I may have to pay a diagnostic fee.
I may keep calling every now and again to see if they have any earlier slots.

Some background reading for you, while you wait: https://gearsmagazine.com/magazine/the- ... -kia-dcts/
I was interested to read that there is a "Clutch Learn Procedure". Sadly, it requires the Factory Service tool to initiate it. I wonder if it is required, as the clutch components wear over time?

Interesting. The issue is they already told me that they want to scan the car to do a diagnostics test. I told them that there is no actual fault code showing. They told me id be charged a fee for that. I can already sense there are going to be debates about what is and what is not covered under their warranty. I have spent all day trying to get someone from Hyundai to send me the terms of my warranty. Genuinely didn't think I'd be in this situation with such a low mileage used approved car.
