There should be 2 different tones. One warning you are approaching the camera and one to let you know you've passed it.

The ultimate tailgate can be set to open without pressing the key fob, but the fob needs to be with you. Stand within a few feet of the tailgate, it will beep a few times then open. Handy if your hands are full. If I recall, the settings under "door" in the settings menu.

I bought that one from amazon last year and had the same problems as you so returned it.
Just bought this one from amazon and so far works fine
