Hi ‘Powlerdad’.

This is what I do:

1) Lock car - either by pressing the button on one or other front door handle or by the lock button on the fob.

2) Then, (I’m R-handed) I hold the fob, buttons facing me, and with my L thumb, I press and hold the top button (lock) and immediately afterwards, with my R thumb, I press and hold the middle button. Red telltale lamp flashes.
I never press the buttons simultaneously!

3) Keeping both buttons depressed, after about 3-4 seconds the little telltale red lamp will flash again and then I release the buttons.

4) Still with fob in hand, check door button to prove the disabled feature has worked.

ps I’m pretty sure the indicators flash along with the little red lamp when both buttons are pressed initially - I tend to stare at the little lamp though, looking for the flash there.

pps Same procedure works on SWMBO’s Bayon although with a very obvious flashing of the indicators on initially pressing the buttons and again on completion.

Wasn't my car that got lifted, 10-15 doors down each way, no idea what the insurance said. We have clever thieves around here, my mate lost 4 wheels off a merc outside his house, locking wheel nuts and alarms were no obstacle.

I’ve stopped thieves stealing my car with a very simple switch hidden under the dashboard. It disabled the ignition system. Disabling the fuel pump or starter circuit would also work.

The failed theft attempt was during the Sydney floods of 1986. Public transport had shut down and I guess some crim needed a car to get home. They broke a window to get in. I installed a similar system on a neighbour’s car. They rolled his car down the road to avoid noise outside his house I guess, but they couldn’t start it.

The beauty of the system is that it’s a one-off design. Nobody knows what circuit has been interrupted nor do they know where I’ve hidden
the switch inside the car. The most expensive part of the install is the 30 amp switch purchased from an Electronics Parts retailer. Circa $20.

That was a while ago. With more recent cars with factory immobilisers, I’ve lifted the lid on the electrics / fuse box under the bonnet and removed a critical relay (fuel or ignition system). What does a thief think when the car won’t start? Foiled by an undetectable Engine Immobiliser? Or the owner has pulled a relay? Probably the former.

A Faraday Cage is a ferrous metal can that blocks radio waves. Try using your phone inside a shipping container with the doors shut. The downside - your tracking system won’t work if your Harley is hidden in a shipping container. Will a car fit into a ide a shipping container?

I can sell you a Faraday Cage for key storage for $100. Ignore the MILO label on the tin! ;-)
Joking aside, dropping your keys into a cleaned out Milo tin should block radio waves (if you put the lid on the tin).
